The department of Microbiology is located on the third floor of the college building. The average daily work timings in department are from 9am to 4pm and its allied section in central laboratory in the hospital, works 24/7 in three different shifts from 8am to 2pm, 2pm to 8pm and 8pm to 8am. The department in the college central area consists of two student demo rooms, faculty rooms, tutor rooms and office room. The other side consists of three blocks. In one block there is a Viral Research and Diagnostic Laboratory for COVID-19 and other viral diseases with restricted entry. The middle block is having student’s practical laboratory with all amenities, library cum research laboratory and a museum. The third block is having Microbiology lab with separate sections of Bacteriology, Mycology, Media preparation room, Immunology/serology, autoclave discard room and storeroom. NABL accredited HIV Viral Load laboratory is within this third block. Apart from this, the department is having ICTC wing for HIV testing in OPD block in the hospital, IDSP wing and a separate diagnostic division in central laboratory where routine clinical diagnostic work like all serological tests is being performed. There is a lecture gallery allotted to the department, which can hold about 200 students. Audio visual aids are available for teaching.

  1. Gram stain sputum

  6. KOH mount for fungus.
  7. Ziehl Neelsen stain for Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Mycobacterium leprae.
  8. Albert’s stain for Corynebacterium diphtheriae.

➢ Culture and sensitivity (bacterial and fungal) of Urine, Blood, Vaginal swab, Throat swab, Stool, Sputum, Pus, Ascitic fluid, Synovial fluid, and CSF with the aid of equipments like laminar air flow, biosafety cabinets type II A, incubator, hot air oven, autoclave, compound binocular microscopes etc.,

➢ Serology – Dengue IgM ELISA, Dengue NS1 ELISA, leptospirosis IgM ELISA, scrub typhus IgM ELISA, Chikungunya IgM ELISA, Widal slide agglutination test, RPR slide agglutination test, CRP slide agglutination test, ASO slide agglutination test, RA factor test, Malaria rapid card test, Dengue rapid card test, HIV rapid card test, HCV rapid card test and HBsAg rapid card test. Equipments: Pipettes, ELISA washer, ELISA reader, incubator, centrifuges, desktop etc.,

➢ Molecular:

  1. HIV viral load testing lab under APSACS & NACO – biosafety cabinet II, automated RNA extraction & master mix by Abbott m2000sp and RT-PCR by Abbott m2000rt
  2. Viral research and diagnostic laboratory for SARS COV-2 and other viruses
  • Sample receiving section.
  • Sample processing room – Thermo Fisher automated extraction machine, Biosafety cabinet II Master mix room – Biosafety cabinet II
  • PCR room – Quantstudio & Biorad
